VOLT - Science tv for kids shooting at the barge (With video)
Created at: 21/02/2009
A kids show about science is currently being filmed at the barge. Various artists from the Illutron group participate as experts, making clever and large scale demonstrations of the experiments. http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=140552805541&h=NQ9A4&u=GtGm0&ref=nf
This show is about light, reflections and tries to explain what goes on inside fiber optic cables.
It is possible to achieve the same effect inside a water jet, if the flow of the water is laminar and layered.
It works like this:
- Expanding the cross section of the pipe to slow down the water
(waterhose 15 mm > 100 mm pipe) - Forcing the water through approximately 200 drinking straws, to make the flow laminar (and layered)
- Adding light (12 halogen)
- Squeezing the water out a small diameter nozzle in the end.
As you can see it the image, we get this acrylic-rod-like flow of water, that keeps the light trapped inside. (at least as long as it is laminar) A little light escapes, which is why the stream of water looks like a bend glowstick. The bending of the light is very visible this way.
