A former tree-canopy biologist from San Francisco, California, Karl is a core/founding member of Half Machine.

Karl is now a visual artist, performance artist, and rigger. In addition to organizing the space/layout of the Docken and his various performances, Karl’s kinetic sculptural additions to halfmachine 2008 include “1/2 Staircase/Fountain” and “1/2 hourglass”.

The 1/2 Staircase / Fountain featured a beautiful turning staircase with cascading water, falling into an iridescent pool of mirrors. The hourglass created the opportunity for people to play with a giant hourglass apparatus, which sifted sand through a suspended funnel, spreading the sand in patterns on the ground below. Karl also performed in the submarine dances, and on the mast of the barge.
